Fallout 4 Far Harbor Side Quests pt. 1

Living on the Edge: Help Cassie, the Mariner, and Captain

Helping the villagers of Far Harbor. Captain Avery needs help herself. After your meeting with Captain Avery, she gives you the Living on the Edge Quest, which is to help the villagers of Far Harbor. She is one of three who will provide you a side quest. One of many in the DLC.

The following lists the three quests you'll get for helping residents of Far Harbor via the Living on the Edge Quest, which leads to Rite of Passage and makes the townsfolk a bit nicer to your character. It's very much worth doing. In the process you can get a Settlement, from which you can send a supply line with Local Leader Rank 2, along with loads of XP from easy to complete quests.

Hull Breach

The Hull Breach side quest in Fallout 4 Far Harbor It's a long walk to the tannery, and there are a few strong ghouls. You can do this and the second part of Blood Tide at the same time for efficiency.

Start: Offer to help The Mariner
Her house is to the left of Andre's weapons shop if you're facing it. She needs special tools to build up The Hull. If you request a reward through a speech check, she'll give you Old Jimmy's Shotgun and 450 caps as a reward. The normal reward is likely just the caps. She needs power tools found at a Tannery far to the west. If you like to be efficient, you can do this quest and the second phase of 'Blood Tide' (to kill the Fog Crawler) in one trip as it's the same direction.

Once you make it inside, you'll encounter a number of ghouls - including a glowing one who has a tannery key - so you can probably use that to open the advanced lock door/expert safe in the office at the entrance. It's not very far to get to the tools you need, and a rather easy quest. Round the corner from the tools and use the key to unlock the exit door. Now you'll be faced with a big decision.

Selling the tools to Machete Mike Selling the Tools to Machete Mike may cause you problems with future side quests from The Mariner.

A man named Machete Mike wants to buy the tools, and he'll offer 2000 caps. 2750 if you pass a speech check. Should you sell the tools? That's a lot of caps for one quest, though you will not get the second quest from the Mariner, and she will want nothing to do with you. Despite this leading to 'Failed' in your quest for Living on the Edge, you CAN still complete it. Let's assume you do not sell them and look at the rewards for the next quest for the Mariner and if it' better than 200 caps. Also, how is that shotgun you can con her into giving you with the speech checks?

The shotgun is disappointing - just a regular Automatic Combat Shotgun. But, she offers you a new quest to improve The Hull. It is NOT required to do this quest to complete Living on the Edge. Just giving her tools completes the 'Help The Mariner' part.

Blood Tide

National Park Campground in Fallout 4 Far Harbor Ghouls infested this area. Clear them out in this fast quest. Cassie's next two are a bit more challenging.

Start: Offer to Help Cassie
Tells you of her family who fell from grace due to greed - from taking too much from the island as she puts it. She seeks revenge on a pack of feral ghouls near National Park Campground, west of Far Harbor.

Completing the quest rewards you 200 caps. While you can try to gouge her for more with a speech check, if you ask her what's next she'll give you another. She'll ask you to kill a Fog Crawler to avenge her Grandpa George.

Fog Crawler in Fallout 4 Far Harbor DLC Fog Crawlers are fairly easy to take out, but they have a ton of health. Seemingly more than the average Deathclaw.

This is a simple matter of fighting a creature with tons of HP, though they do not seem to do much damage even on Hard. I'd say it'll be much more challenging above that difficulty, depending on your build. Travel to the Crawler and take it out. Upon turning in the quest to Cassie, she gives you the deed to the farm and a workbench will appear there. You can now use Dalton Farm as a Workshop! This completes the objective to Help Cassie for the Living on the Edge Quest, though she gives you yet another quest to go after some Trappers in a lighthouse to avenge her husband Daniel.

Since the focus of this walkthrough is to determine rewards for the Living on the Edge Quest and it's a simple go-here-kill-leader quest, I'll not bother to go further. You DO get an unique hook weapon for completing it, which melee players may find enticing.

Safe Passage

The Fog Condensers are easy to fix, the mirelurks are easy, too. Easy Quest. This is a very easy, fast quest for Captain Avery. Walk around the area of Howard's corpse if you get a bug.

Start: Offer to help Captain Avery
Look for Howard Dunbar, south of Far Harbor. He was supposed to repair the town's water supply, and has parts on him to do the job. You'll have to find him, and repair the fog condensers to ensure the town's water supply is safe.

If this quest bugs on you after finding Howard's body (as it did for me), try to walk around the area you found his body until it triggers. Somehow, he was off from where he was supposed to be, though the transfer of items should've probably been what completed this stage.

Regardless, it's now an easy matter of going to 3 separate fog condensers. A couple of Mirelurks may spawn after you install the third. Finishing this quest nets you 200 caps and checks off the quest to help Captain Avery on the 'Living on the Edge' Quest.

Finishing Living on the Edge (Minor Spoilers)

Once you've got to the necessary quest stages for living on the Edge. You now have the ability to take on the 'Rite of Passage' Quest to earn the respect of the citizens of Far Harbor, and perhaps even greater rewards. Nothing will let you build in Far Harbor itself, but thanks to Dalton Farm you have a place to send a supply line from your other Settlements. This will let you easily access your crafting materials from the mainland. Additionally, if you continue and finish Rite of Passage, you'll get a special Captain's Hat that provides +2 INT and increases the wearer's movement speed by 10%. As people will ask, it cannot be upgraded with Ballistic Weave, but it's stil one damned fine hat. Finishing Rite of Passage will give you even more side quests and a slightly better reward that may help you secure loot from under the water. It's very much worth doing for those who want to explore and find what Bethesda may have put off the coast of the island.
